Support Proposition 33 to Fight for Affordable Rents and Against Illegal Evictions

By now many Californians are familiar with the California Tenant Protection Act (see Civil Code section 1947.12) and their local rent control laws, which protect tenants by limiting their yearly rent increases to ten percent or less of their current rent.

But did you know that landlords can charge new tenants any rent they want and it’s one of the main reasons landlords are so eager to illegally evict their current tenants? The Costa-Hawkins Rental Housing Act of 1995 forbids your local government from using rent control laws to protect new tenants, tenants in housing built after February 1, 1995, and tenants in single family homes. As a result, no one can stop landlords from charging these tenants as much rent as they want.

That is why the most important measure on the November 5, 2024, ballot is Proposition 33. Proposition 33 would repeal the Costa-Hawkins Rental Housing Act. This would mean that tenants in newly built housing, tenants in single family homes, and tenants moving into new units could be protected by rent control laws. It would also mean that tenants’ current landlords couldn’t profit from illegally evicting them wherever those new rent control laws were passed.
