Tenant Farmers Organizing at New Roots Community Garden

Tenant farmers at New Roots Community Farm are facing a critical struggle against San Diego NGO City Heights Community Development Corporation (City Heights CDC).  In 2020, City Heights CDC usurped the farm, without a lease with the City, collecting rent and exploiting farmer’s images and stories for its own financial gain. In October of this year tenant farmers began a petition for self-governance.

In response, City Heights CDC retaliated with threats of eviction and textbook union busting tactics. Farmers are now forming their own non-profit organization to obtain a lease from the City, seeking autonomy from City Heights CDC control.
